			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>En viktig del i marknadsföringen av en app är att göra en film som visar upp appen. Eftersom vår app Happi Reads skulle släppas på App Store idag behövde vi få ihop en film lite snabbt. Appen hette tidigare &#8221;I Read&#8221;, men efter att ha slåtts med sökmotor-o-optimering i App Store bestämde vi oss för att byta namn på hela projektet från My Pal Apps till Happi Papi och dessutom byta namn på apparna så att de börjar med &#8221;Happi&#8221; (Happi är snigeln i loggan).</p>

<p>Utan att ha en egentlig idé om hur filmen skulle byggas upp gav jag barnen iPaden och bad dem spela Happi Reads medan jag filmade. Till bruset av ett akvarium och en brummande videokameramotor (insåg jag efteråt) började de spela medan de busade, pratade och sjöng. Jag filmade lite planlöst med egentligen enda målet att få hyfsade vinklar och ljussättning. I efterhand insåg jag att ljudet var mer eller mindre värdelöst eftersom de dels pratade svenska (filmen ska släppas world wide), dels oväsendet från videokameran och akvariet plus att en moped så klart lyckades köra förbi samtidigt.</p>
<p>Efter lite färgjustering och klippning hade jag i varje fall lite bildmaterial som funkade. För att få in själva appen så gjorde jag en enkel screen capture och filmade ett par sekvenser när jag spelade Happi Reads i iOS Simulator. Nu var bara frågan vad filmen egentligen skulle handla om.</p>
<p>Eftersom 3-åringen halvvägs igenom bestämde sig för att lägga sig på golvet och sjunga Jedwards &#8221;Lipstick&#8221; samtidigt som 6-åringen jublar över att hon svarar rätt kändes det som ett bra slut, och då var det bara att sätta ihop sekvensen där de startar appen, brygga med skärmdumparna från appen och med sekvenser där de spelar till fram till slutscenen. En liten minidokumentär helt enkelt.</p>
<p>Eftersom ljudet från filmen till större delen var oanvändbart blev ljudsättningen lite klurig. Jag ville behålla känslan av att de har kul och busar medan de spelar, så jag ville få med så mycket originalljud som möjligt, så det blev en del pusslande med de ljudsnuttar som gick att använda. Till sist återstod bara frågan om musik &#8211; skulle det vara upptempo, akustiskt, jazzigt, barnsligt? Efter en hel del experimenterande i GarageBand fastnade jag till sist för att göra en upptempo-låt med gitarr och trummor.</p>
<p>Hur blev filmen då? Med två dagars produktionstid, noll budget och två barn på full volym som &#8221;hjälpredor&#8221; är jag riktigt nöjd:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Designing with your heart is often required to achieve a good result. There is especially one type of projects where you really need to put your heart and emotions into the project and that is designing for kids. The great reward is also there &#8211; that is the only time when you can really bring out those vivid colors and funny ideas. But it is not all technicolor-fantasies-with-oompa-loompas, there are a lot of things to keep in mind. I&#8217;ve done my fair share of kids projects, ranging from 3D animated movies, DVD games, web sites, micro sites, digital magazines and cartoon movies. The hardest projects have been those where the target audience is both the kid and the parent. How do you successfully make a movie/game that makes a three-year-old happy and keeps the parent (who buys and reviews the product) satisfied. The kid loves to watch the movie fifty-five times in a row, the parent gets bored the second time. You may bewilder your target audience (the kid) but you push away your buyer (the parent).</p>
<p>A while back ago I was involved in a project based on one of the worlds greatest storytellers and children book authors &#8211; Astrid Lindgren. In a project like that you really try to push yourself to create something that honors her beliefs and world of stories &#8211; not something that appeals to a market segment. It&#8217;s more important to find the heart of the stories than to find the best call to action, if you get what I mean.</p>
<p>This actually applies to most kids design, because kids are very good at spotting what&#8217;s &#8221;constructed&#8221; and what&#8217;s &#8221;created&#8221;. If you put your heart into the project, use your humor and intuition, odds are that you will end up with something that kids will enjoy. You will also probably have a lot of fun doing it. However, there are also a lot of things you need to keep in mind.</p>
<p>- First off &#8211; the legal stuff. Marketing for kids is, thank god, very restricted and you need to know what to do and what not to do.</p>
<p>- Secondly &#8211; kids need the same level of good navigation as grown-ups. Kids will not be able to use a crappy navigation system just because the buttons are bright red and blinking &#8211; they need a good system.</p>
<p>- Thirdly - click areas should be large and call to actions easy to spot (as always).</p>
<p>- Fourthly &#8211; combine text and icons. Younger kids can&#8217;t read (duh).</p>
<p>- Fifth &#8211; bright lights &#8211; big city. Think vivid colors and large and easily spotted shapes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I like newsletters. Newsletters are a bit like one-page web sites but with much harder restrictions. They need to look good (despite of extremely limited conditions), they need to convert well in a short time and they have to go through one of the worst barriers in online marketing &#8211; the email client. They also need to be well composed and developed to be able to edit the newsletter week after week.</p>
<p>Newsletters are kind of the ultimate challenge &#8211; and therefore also one of the more interesting areas to study. Don&#8217;t forget that emails has among the highest ROI of all online marketing techniques (note, this only applies to house lists &#8211; bought lists have one of the worst ROI&#8217;s but I&#8217;ll save that for another post). Emails are also very easy to track statistically so if you master the techniques you have a very attractive channel at hand.</p>
<p>I stumbled upon this newsletter from Ann Taylor today, which I find just beautiful. I love how the model is kind of off-guard, the depth in the picture and how the typography plays together with the models clothes. The copywriting works well and the navigation bar on top of the image gives instant access to the online store. &#8221;Fall in love&#8230;&#8221; is of course a nice metaphor for autumn and love, and is the kind of wordplay I like to see in copy. It shows that the copywriter have paid attention to the content. The colors are rich and beautiful and also gives you a sense of autumn.</p>

<p>Personally I would have wanted the call to action to stand out more &#8211; as it is placed now the user has to scroll down below the fold to even see the rebate. The model is a bit blurry as well, a bit more sharpening wouldn&#8217;t hurt. It is the model that really makes this newsletter &#8211; and how well she does it! The placement, the direction of her eyes, how her arms point to the headline &#8211; it all comes together. Her smile feels genuine and the image communicates honesty in a manner that doesn&#8217;t come across too often in this type of images.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>A good web site is content-driven</strong><br />
The only thing that matters in the long run is content. You will never get a high rate of returning visitors with bad content and you will never get a good search engine placement with bad content. If you pick up a magazine and the articles are boring, you would never buy it again would you? You need to think of the content right from the start &#8211; what value will my content give the visitor. The design process and the technical process must both take the content to the heart and create their processes on it. The design must communicate the content in the best way and the technical framework must channel the content in the best way.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Be agile</strong></p>
<p>There is only one person who can tell you if your web site is working. You can&#8217;t, you can only guess. Your agency can&#8217;t, the can also only guess. The only person with the real answer is your customer. And the customer won&#8217;t give you the answer until you have released the web site. You can try to trick the customer by bringing them in for focus tests, eye tracking studies etc, but you still won&#8217;t get the real answer until you release your project to the world. As Henry Ford said &#8211; &#8221;If I asked the customers what they wanted, they would have answered that they want faster horses. No one would answer &#8216;a car&#8217;.&#8221;. Therefore you need to be agile &#8211; you need to be able to change your opinions. Don&#8217;t build a fortress and lock down your positions &#8211; be prepared to move with your customers. You can spend weeks on perfecting your signup process and believing that no one could ever misunderstand the design &#8211; and yet the customers never get past the first step. Be agile &#8211; be ready for changes.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Use the fork, Luke</strong></p>
<p>Your market will change and your needs will change. Often more rapidly than you think. To be able to respond to those changes you need to think ahead. There are heaps of tools that will help you and give you that possibility &#8211; free and commercial. If you are building a site with more than say 10 pages, use a content management tool. Don&#8217;t build your own solution, it will most certainly be very expensive both to build and in the long run (and you will suffer hard from the lack of search optimization techniques and efficient cache systems). Use the 960 grid design system, it will both save you time and prepare you for design changes. For the database access layers, use tools such as SubSonic to dynamically generate a DAL from your database (you will save months of hard work!). There is a vast array of tools that will both save you time and help you to be ready for rapid changes along the way &#8211; use them!</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Statistics, statistics, statistics</strong></p>
<p>Even if you think that number crunching isn&#8217;t your cup of tea, try to get into it. The numbers will be your best friends when it comes to determining how your site is performing. As soon as you embark on your project, start collecting data if you can. If you already have a web site, analyze the numbers, check the funnels, learn the statistical package. You will benefit greatly if you know your way around the numbers. Personally I would recommend you to try out Google Analytics if you don&#8217;t use it &#8211; it&#8217;s free and it got all the bells and whistles you need.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>The spiders are your friends</strong></p>
<p>When you build your web site, don&#8217;t forget the little unvisible visitors &#8211; the spiders. The search engines sends out their spiders to crawl your web site to gather all the information they can. Build your web site in a spider-friendly manner. Make all your content visible to the spiders and make all your pages easy to locate. Build sitemaps and supply them to Google Webmaster Tools and the equivalents at Bing and Yahoo. Do everything you can &#8211; but stay clear of the black hat SEO-techniques. They may give you an upside in the short run, but ultimately may cost you the web sites presence in the search engines in the long run. Remember that Googles core business is to try to provide quality content to the searchers, and if you supply quality content you will end up in a good place.</p>

<p>Funderar du på vilket verktyg du ska använda för den nya kampanjsiten? Kollat runt på ett gäng CMS-system? Du vill förstås bygga en avancerad site men har inte riktigt budgeten för ett stort projekt.</p>
<p>Ett gott råd &#8211; ta en rejäl titt på <a href="http://wordpress.org/">WordPress</a>. Systemet som tidigare var mest ett nichesystem för bloggare har nu vuxit till sig rejält och kan faktiskt i många avseenden ge större CMS-system en rejäl match när det gäller redaktionellt content. WordPress är nog det system som imponerat allra mest på mig under alla de år jag arbetat med webben. Oavsett om det är en kampanjsite, fulländad webbsite eller intranätsapplikation så ta med WordPress i din urvalslista.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bilmärket &#8221;formerly known as Saab&#8221; har släppt en ny branding-kampanj (byrå Lowe Brindfors) med TV-reklam och en <a href="http://changeperspective.saab.com/se/sv/">kampanjsite</a>. Oavsett vad man tycker om deras bilar (var det någon som hostade &#8221;boooring&#8221;?) så är kampanjen fantastiskt välgjord och rolig. Integrationen mellan video/innehåll/informationsinsamling är strålande genomförd.</p>
<p>Frågan är väl dock om den får fler att vilja köpa Saab-bilar? Kärnproblemet just nu är kanske inte deras branding-plattform.</p>

<p>Kommer du ihåg &#8221;I&#8217;m with stupid&#8221;-tröjorna? Fantastiskt enkel idé och strålande copy. Men om du tar bort pilen, vem är egentligen stupid då? Troligen du, eftersom det är du som bär tröjan.</p>
<p>När du designar en landningssida, tänk på att alltid visa riktningen för besökaren. Placera elementen så ögat naturligt rör sig mot din call-to-action, prova gärna exempelvis en s-kurva om du ska visa många produkter. Och var inte rädd för att använda pilar! Knappar med pilar i eller kring har ofta högre konvertering än de utan.</p>
<p>Och om du tvekar, tänk på vad Jean-Paul Sartre sa: &#8221;Val ger människan ångest&#8221;. Hjälp till att ta bort den ångesten &#8211; visa vägen!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>De gamla hjältarna Pearl Jam har bestämt sig för att återutge en av det tidiga 90-talets bästa skivor: Ten. I samband med lanseringen har det gjort en microsite, <a href="http://www.pearljamtengame.com/">Pearl Jam Ten Game</a> med ett litet pussel som gör att man kan låsa upp låtar och lyssna på skivan online. En ganska snygg site, framför allt när man börjar gräva lite djupare. Spelet är oinspirerande med en ganska svag koppling till Pearl Jam. Överlag hade jag önskat en mycket tydligare koppling till Pearl Jams visuella approach &#8211; framför allt Jeff Aments typografi och foton.</p>
