Kindle Beta Developer Program Opened
Amazon has opened the beta program for developing Kindle content. Kindle, the Amazon e-book reader most known for being a book reading device, now pushes forward to be converted into a more versatile tool. The timing is perfect with the upcoming shipping of the Apple iPad. A lot of development focus will be targeted towards the iPad, leaving an interesting area open getting apps through the Amazon store instead of the overcrowded Apple App store. Well, at least for the US content providers, since the Kindle probably won’t kick off internationally until Amazon opens up the entire catalogue outside the US.

Unfortunately Amazons decision to set a fixed $9.99 price will keep the publishers off their platform and take refuge in the iBook store. Nice move Jobs, to open up your pricing strategy in order to let the publisher choose side, and eventually make sure that there’s no more competition on the distributor side.
Yup, Jobs did a smart move. It reminds a bit of the eBay melt-down in China where they failed to realize that it’s not enough to be a big player – there will come competitors with a better prizing strategy. Amazon really has a great platform and consumer base to work with, they should be able to offer a much better solution. They have had the time and distribution channels on their side, it’s a pity to throw it away just because they are greedy.
